Metsä Fibre and Fimpec have signed a preliminary agreement for the construction phase of the Kemi bioproduct mill. The final readiness of the mill investment is expected to be achieved in autumn 2020.

The strong co-operation between the companies, which started with Metsä Group’s Äänekoski bioproduct mill project, continues. Fimpec will be responsible for project management and site supervision services for the construction of the Kemi bioproduct mill. At Äänekoski bioproduct mill, the area of responsibility was the same.

“Metsä Group is progressing systematically in its investment projects in Finland, giving its unwavering faith in the future of industry in the current exceptional circumstances. Our experts will work closely as part of the implementation organization of the Kemi bioproduct mill and we will be able to bring our special expertise to a demanding implementation phase of the project. The success of the project is based on our highly skilled staff committed to customer’s goals and our highly refined service concepts based on Lean operating models”, says Pekka Salomaa, Chairman of the Board of Fimpec.

If implemented, the Kemi bioproduct mill would be the biggest wood processing unit in the Northern hemisphere and the largest investment in the history of the Finland’s forest industry, worth EUR 1.5 billion. Efficient in terms of the environment, energy and materials, the mill would operate entirely without fossil fuels and produce 1.5 million tonnes of softwood and birch pulp and many other bioproducts annually.
